Practical Application on Shabbat:

Liquid moisturizer:

Only a liquid is permitted.
You can use the liquid moisturizer as long as it doesn’t help the minerals last beyond
24 hours. After applying the liquid, you must wait until the skin is dry - up to 30 minutes. The skin must be dry in order to apply powder.

Foundation:

All powder in loose form may be used on completely dry skin.

Lips:

Dry lips may be treated with oil-based, roll-on gloss. You can apply the oil before
or after the lip powder is applied.

Eyes:

You may apply foundation/concealer on the eyes and then eyeshadow/s.
You may not blend eyeshadow colors on the eyelid with the intention to create a
new color. It's perfectly fine to layer one color over another as long as your
intention isn't to blend them. If you wish to blend powdered colors you must do so
prior to Shabbat and have one brush designated for that new color.

Brushes:

Each color must have a designated brush.
Brushes are to be used with dry, loose powder only.
Colors may not be blended.

What are the prohibitions of applying regular makeup on Shabbat and how Shabbat
makeup offers a solution:

Prohibitions on Shabbat:

A. Tzoveya (צובע = (Permanently alter the color of a surface

B. Memachek (ממחק = (Breaking down a solid material or smoothing it. (EX: Solid material bar soap, pressed powder)

C. Memarehach (ממרח = (Smearing a solid fat. (The thickness of how fast something pours matters. A thick, paste consistency is an issue. It has to pour like water and cant leave a
film behind to be permissible. EX: Chapsticks is an issue)

How these prohibitions are resolved with the use of Shabbat makeup:

A. Mineral powdered makeup is temporary and there is no permanency. Having separate
brushes for each powder and applying on dry skin solves the prohibition of Tzoveya. It's
all about intention. You can apply your powdered foundation, concealer, bronzer, eyeliner eyeshadow and lip color to enhance your appearance but if your intention is to apply in order to blend and create new colors that's prohibited.

B. Loose powder solves the prohibition of Memachek since you are not breaking down any solid material.

C. Having a very liquidy oil solves the prohibition of Memarehach.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, because your intention is to alter the color, which is prohibited. You could rub the bronzer with your now clean bronzer brush to lighten the color. Brushes can both apply and remove color to some degree.

Yes, you can. The minerals do not mix in with the dried liquid makeup so there is no problem.

You can moisturize your skin with a liquidy oil, allowing it to dry completely. To ensure
thorough preparation, you can gently pat a paper towel on your face or rub your dry
hands to remove any excess moisture before applying the powdered makeup.
